The Angel Wings Session

Angel wings boudoir is the set women ask me about most, usually before they have even seen the rest of my portfolio. It is my signature look at My Story Boudoir, large feather wings available in white, black or pink, shot in my Footscray studio as one part of a full session rather than the whole point of it. I want to walk you through what it actually is, because the real thing is simpler, and steadier, than the name might suggest.

What the set actually is

The wings are large and fully feathered, built to sit properly across a woman’s back and shoulders rather than perch awkwardly like a costume piece. I shoot them with simple, deliberate lighting so the focus stays on you, your posture, your expression, the line of your body, with the wings framing rather than distracting. It is a slower, more considered set than people sometimes expect. There is no smoke machine or theatrical backdrop. Just you, the wings, and careful light.

I usually shoot this set later in a session, once you have warmed up in front of the camera and settled into being guided through poses. By that point most women have relaxed considerably, and it shows in the images. I direct you the same way I direct every other set, from your fingertips to your chin, so there is nothing technical to think about beyond following along.

White, black or pink: what each tends to say

I offer the wings in three colours, and women usually know which one they want the moment they see the options, sometimes before they can explain why.

White reads pure and iconic. It is the colour most women picture first, and it tends to suit a story about softness, or about arriving somewhere new in life. Black reads fierce. Women who choose black are often after something a little more powerful, a little more unapologetic, a different register entirely to white but no less beautiful. Pink reads soft and warm, somewhere between the other two, and it often suits a woman who wants gentleness without losing presence.

None of these choices are right or wrong. I simply ask what story you want these photographs to tell, and the colour tends to follow naturally from your answer. Occasionally a woman arrives certain she wants one colour and changes her mind the moment she sees all three in the studio, and that is completely fine too. There is no wrong door here, only the one that feels most like you on the day.

What to wear with the wings

Simple works best. The wings themselves carry a huge amount of the frame, so an elaborate outfit underneath tends to compete rather than complement. A simple bodysuit, a fine strap set, or even bare shoulders with minimal styling usually photographs best, because it lets the wings and your body do the work without visual noise pulling attention away. We talk through this together before your session, and if you would like the fuller picture on outfits generally, this guide to what to wear to a boudoir shoot is a good place to start.

One part of your session, not the whole of it

I want to be honest about this because I think it matters. The Angel Wings set is one look within a full session, not a replacement for everything else we do together. Most sessions move through a handful of different sets and styles, from something intimate and simple through to the wings, so you leave with a genuinely varied gallery rather than one single dramatic idea repeated a dozen times. If you are curious about the full shape of a session from start to finish, this post covers exactly what to expect.

Deciding if an angel wings boudoir session is right for your story

Not every woman who books a session ends up choosing the wings, and that is completely fine. Some prefer to keep their whole session simple and intimate, without a signature set at all. I never push anyone toward it. What I usually suggest is that you come to your styling conversation with an open mind, tell me what you are drawn to and why, and we decide together whether the wings belong in your story or whether your session is better served without them.

For the women who do choose it, the reason is rarely about the wings themselves. It is about what the wings let them say, visually, about a chapter of their life, whether that is arriving somewhere new, feeling powerful again, or simply wanting one image that feels a little larger than an ordinary day.

It photographs beautifully on every body

The wings do not favour a particular shape, height or age. I have photographed this set on women in their twenties and women in their sixties, women who came in nervous about their arms or their stomach, women of every size. The wings sit the same way, regally, across every set of shoulders, and the lighting and posing I use are built to flatter the woman wearing them, not a particular body type. If size has ever felt like a reason to rule yourself out of a session like this, this post speaks directly to that.

A set worth asking about

If you have been drawn to this set from a photo you saw somewhere, that instinct is worth trusting. Come and see the wings in person, ask about the colour that feels right for your story, and we will build the rest of your session around it. There is no need to decide anything before you arrive. Plenty of women make the final call on the day, once they have seen how each colour catches the light in the studio and how it feels to actually stand in front of the camera wearing them.

You are welcome to send a message and I will send you the details, or ask your questions first through my contact page. My Footscray studio is also worth a look if you want to see the space itself, which you can do on this page about the studio.

Quick answers

What colours does the Angel Wings set come in?

White, black or pink. White tends to read pure and iconic, black reads fierce and powerful, and pink reads soft and warm. We choose together based on the story you want your photos to tell.

What should I wear for the angel wings photos?

Keep it simple. The wings carry most of the frame, so a plain bodysuit or fine strap set usually photographs better than something elaborate. We talk through your outfit choices together before the session.

Is the angel wings set the whole session?

No. It is one part of a full session that includes several different looks and sets. Most women leave with a varied gallery, and the wings are one striking chapter within it rather than the entire story.
