Melbourne Boudoir Photography: The Complete Guide
If you have ever typed “boudoir photography Melbourne” into a search bar late at night, closed the tab, and told yourself you would look into it another time, this Melbourne boudoir photography guide is for you. I wrote it to answer every question I get asked in my Footscray studio, in the order women actually ask them, so you can read it once and feel like you understand the whole picture before you ever send an enquiry.
I am Michelle, and I have spent years photographing women across Melbourne, from Footscray locals to women who travel in from Ballarat and Geelong for the day. What follows is everything I know, told to you honestly, the way I would if you were sitting across from me with a cup of tea.
What boudoir photography actually is, and what it is not
Boudoir photography is an intimate portrait session, taken in a private studio, that is about you and for you. It is not a lingerie catalogue shoot. It is not performed for anyone else’s approval, not a partner’s, not a friend’s, not even mine. It is a woman deciding, on her own terms, that she is allowed to be photographed exactly as she is right now, without waiting for some future version of herself to earn it.
It is also not what a lot of women expect from the word. There is no pressure to be overtly sexy, no requirement to be undressed if that is not what you want, and nothing clinical or transactional about the process. A session moves at your pace, in a closed studio, with full guidance from start to finish. You do not need experience, confidence you do not yet feel, or a body that looks a certain way. You need willingness, and I bring everything else.
I say this often because it matters, so I will say it here too. You do not have to be naked to book a boudoir session. Some women wear lingerie for the whole shoot, some wear a partner’s oversized shirt, some mix both across their outfits. If this is the exact thing holding you back, I have written honestly about it in do I have to be naked for boudoir. And if your body has changed recently, whether through pregnancy, illness, weight, surgery or simply time, that change belongs in the frame, not hidden from it. I have photographed plus size women, women after babies, women mid recovery from something hard, and women simply living in the body they have today. There is no version of yourself you need to become first.

Who books a boudoir session in Melbourne
There is no single type of woman who books this, but there are patterns I see again and again. Mothers who have spent years being needed by everyone else and want one afternoon that belongs only to them. Nurses, carers and shift workers who give their bodies to other people’s care all week and rarely get looked after themselves, something I understand personally, having spent years as a nurse manager in aged care before I picked up a camera. Brides preparing something private and personal before their wedding day. Women who are starting over after a divorce, a loss, or simply a long stretch of not recognising themselves. Women turning 40 or 50 who decided the milestone deserved more than a dinner out.
Most are between 30 and 55. Most have never done anything like this before. Almost all of them tell me, afterwards, that they wish they had booked sooner. If any of that sounds like you, you are exactly who this is for, whether you are a bride researching bridal boudoir in Melbourne, a new mum considering a session, or a woman simply doing this for herself with no occasion at all.
You also do not need a reason. Plenty of women arrive with one, a wedding, a birthday, a baby, a divorce finalised, a diagnosis behind them. Just as many arrive with nothing more than a quiet feeling that it is time to see themselves properly. Both reasons are equally valid, and neither needs to be justified to me or to anyone else before you book.
The fears women bring with them, in the order I hear them
I will tell you the fears in the order they usually come up, because knowing you are not the only one carrying them tends to loosen their grip.
First, almost every woman worries she does not have “the right body” for this. She imagines boudoir clients look a certain way, and she does not look like that. I photograph every shape, size and age, and this fear is, without exception, the least accurate one women carry.
Second is the fear of feeling awkward. Women picture themselves frozen in front of the camera, unsure what to do with their hands, their face, their whole body. This is genuinely common, and it is also the easiest fear to solve, because I direct you from the tips of your fingers to the angle of your chin. You are never left to figure it out alone.
Third is privacy. Who will see these photos? Will they end up somewhere I cannot control? This fear deserves a completely honest answer, and I have a full page dedicated to it if you want to read more about privacy and consent.
Fourth is age, particularly among women over 40 or 50 who assume this is a young woman’s activity. It is not, and it never was.
Fifth, further down the list than you might expect, is cost. Women worry about the money before they even know what a session includes or what payment options exist.
There is also a smaller, quieter fear that tends to surface once someone has already decided to book. What if I do not like the way I look, once I actually see the photos? It is a fair question, and it is one I take seriously rather than brushing aside. Posing, light and guidance carry far more of the outcome than most women expect, and if there is a part of you that you would prefer to feature less, we work with that together, gently, without it ever being made into a bigger conversation than it needs to be.
If any of these are sitting with you specifically, there are longer answers waiting. I have written honestly about whether boudoir shoots are actually awkward, about whether you are too old for boudoir, which I promise you are not, and about how to book if you are not feeling confident in your body right now.

What is included, and what to wear
A full session at my Footscray studio runs roughly three to four hours and includes professional hair and makeup, so you arrive as yourself and leave photo ready without having to organise any of it separately. The studio is private and closed while you shoot, with women only present in the room. You are guided the entire time, through posing, through wardrobe, through every small decision, so nothing is left to guesswork.
As for what to wear, bring more than you think you need. Three or four outfits is the sweet spot for most women, and we go through your bag together before we start, so you are never deciding alone. If you want the full breakdown, including which pieces photograph beautifully on every body, I have written a complete guide on what to wear to a boudoir shoot. Many women also love my signature Angel Wings set, available in white, black or pink, if you want something with a little more drama.
You do not need to buy anything expensive or new. Some of the most striking images come from a partner’s shirt, a robe you already own, or a set that has been sitting in a drawer waiting for an occasion. What matters more than the garment is how it feels against your skin, whether you can move in it, and whether it lets your face relax rather than pulling your attention to a strap or a seam.
The full journey, from your first message to your reveal
Understanding the whole arc tends to settle nerves more than anything else, so here it is, start to finish.
It begins with a message. You reach out, tell me a little about yourself, and ask whatever is on your mind. There is no pressure at this stage, and no obligation attached to asking questions. From there we usually have a conversation, by message, phone or in person, about what you are hoping for, what worries you, and what a session with me actually looks like.
When you are ready, a small retainer secures your date. Payment plans are available weekly or fortnightly, and the remaining balance settles two to three weeks before your shoot, so nothing is rushed and nothing is a surprise. I will walk you through exactly what happens after you book, which you can also read in detail here, including how to prepare in the weeks leading up to your session.
On the day, you arrive, settle in, have your hair and makeup done, and then we shoot together for three to four hours. I direct every pose, so you never have to think about what to do. Afterwards, image selection and ordering happen at a separate appointment called the reveal, where you see your photos for the first time. If you want to know exactly what that appointment feels like, I have written more about what a boudoir reveal session involves. You can also read a broader walk-through of the whole day in my guide to what to expect at a boudoir photoshoot in Melbourne.
After your reveal, you choose what you want to take home, whether that is prints, an album, wall art or digital files, and everything is produced once you have made those decisions, never before. There is no obligation to order more than you are comfortable with, and no pressure applied while you are deciding. The whole arc, from that first nervous message to the moment you hold your finished images, is designed so that you are supported and informed at every single step, never rushed and never left guessing what happens next.

Privacy, consent and honest pricing
Privacy is not a policy I mention in passing. It is the foundation of how the studio operates. Nothing is ever shared, anywhere, without your explicit written consent. Consent is entirely optional, it can be withdrawn at any time, and it is never a condition of booking a session with me. You are never pressured at your reveal, and you are never made to feel that sharing your images is expected of you. I have written a full page on this if it is the thing keeping you up at night, which you can find at are boudoir photos private.
On pricing, I would rather be plain than vague. Collections start from $997. Payment plans are available weekly or fortnightly, so you are never asked to pay everything at once, a small retainer secures your date, and the remaining balance settles two to three weeks before your session. If you want a fuller breakdown of what shapes the final cost, I have written about it directly in boudoir photoshoot cost in Melbourne, and if payment plans are the deciding factor for you, there is more detail in how boudoir payment plans work.
I would rather a woman ask me directly what something costs than sit at home doing mental maths with numbers she found on a forum somewhere. If you are still unsure whether this fits your budget, send a message and ask. You will get a straight answer, not a sales script.
How to choose a photographer, and finding the studio in Footscray
Not every photographer is the right fit for every woman, and it is worth choosing carefully. Ask who will be in the room during your session. Ask what happens to your images afterwards, and get the answer in writing if it matters to you, which it should. Ask how much guidance you will receive if you have never done this before. Ask to see real, recent work, not just the images that look easiest to shoot. I have laid out a longer list of questions in how to choose a boudoir photographer in Melbourne, and I have written more about why so many women specifically look for a female boudoir photographer in Melbourne. If trust is the thing you are weighing most heavily right now, I have also written honestly about what trust actually looks like in a boudoir studio.
It is also worth trusting your own read of a studio, not just its answers. Notice how a photographer speaks about other clients, whether their language feels respectful or reduces women to bodies, and whether you feel rushed or genuinely listened to during that first conversation. A good fit usually announces itself quietly, in how safe the conversation feels before you have even booked anything.
My studio is at 13 Beaurepaire Parade, Footscray, in Melbourne’s inner west. There is street parking close by, and Footscray station is a short walk away, so the studio is easy to reach whether you are driving in from the eastern suburbs, catching the train from the CBD, or travelling in from further afield. Women regularly make the trip from Ballarat, about an hour and fifteen minutes by car on the Western Freeway or by V/Line train straight to Footscray station, and from Geelong, about an hour by car on the Princes Freeway or by V/Line train on the Geelong line, which also stops at Footscray. You can read more about the space itself, including what the studio looks like on the day, at the Footscray boudoir studio.

If you have read this far, something in you is already curious, and that is enough of a reason to ask a question. You do not need to have decided anything yet. You are welcome to send a message through my contact page and ask me whatever is sitting with you first. I will answer honestly, and there is never any pressure attached to reaching out.
